Workplace Safety Watch – June 2020

Construction

On 1 June, Shrimant Balasaheb Gaikwad (27), a worker at Chakan factory, died upon falling off the roof into a shut furnace. He was made to climb up the roof that was 35 feet above the ground level to change a transparent sheet. A case under sections 304(a) (causing death due to negligence) of Indian Penal Code has been registered against the labour contractor.

On 2 June, Billa Rajesam (46), Bandi Arjaiah (48), Rakesh Rajanna Belkivar (27) and Bandari Praveen (37) died while many were injured in an open cast mining site explosion at Singareni Collieries Company Limited in Telangana. A criminal case has been registered against the contractor under sections 304a, 296 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under Section 9 of explosives act. The families of the deceased demand a compensation of 1 crore and a job for each family

On 3 June, Pramila Chandi (18) and Madanabati Chandi (22) died upon falling while unloading bricks at a brick kiln at the M/S K.N.R Bricks in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. The employer has paid Rs. 4,50,000 to each family as compensation.

On 9 June, Kumkum Bai (35), Bhuri Bai (25), Leela Bai (30) and Ram Lal (20) died from being trapped in a 60-feet deep well they had constructed, as the brick wall caved in on them. The incident occurred in a Bijnor Khedi village in Shajapur district of Madhya Pradesh. A case has been registered against the well owner Kalu Singh Sondhia and his brother Narayan Singh who are absconding.

On 16 June, construction worker Suraidas (35) died of electrocution upon coming in contact with a live wire while working on a stormwater drain at an under-construction bridge in Ittumadu, Karnataka.

Manufacturing

On 3 June, contractual workers Pramod Yadav (26), Arun Kori (19), Jayant Mahato (28), Surajlal Singh Rajput (35), Munna Singh Shivprasad Singh (38), Tripurari Rai (25), Hari Darshankumar Chaudhary (20), Rashmikant Chauhan (35), and Naresh Prajapati (27) who were working in dangerous conditions without safety gear, died and 70 others were severely injured in a boiler blast at agrochemical company Yashashvi Rasayan Private Ltd in Bharuch, Gujarat. An ex-gratia of 5 lakh has been announced by the company for each of the deceased’s family. The labour department has issued a notice under section 4 (2) of the Factories Act asking for the closure of the unit. The victims have called out the police for inaction and for delaying the arrests of company owners.

On 19 June, Swaroop Singh (30) died and four women workers injured at a boiler blast in Ramswarup pesticide factory in Chinhat, Lucknow.

On 17 June, a contract worker died of an electric shock while working on an electrical wiring at a pharmaceutical company in Visakhapatnam. A case has been registered and the matter is under investigation.

Sanitation

On 23 June, Subhash Dagaur (35), a sanitation worker died on inhaling toxic gases inside a septic tank at a house in Chattisgarh’s Mungeli district.

On 24 June, Anil Saini (39), Sanjay Kumar (26), Dharmender (35) and Ranjit Dhanak (28) who worked as Municipal Corporation sweepers died of asphyxiation on being forced to clean a public division disposal plant’s septic tank without safety equipment. Rohtak Municipal Corporation worker Neeraj, junior engineer Sandeep Dhankar, executive engineer Vijender Hooda, subdivisional officer Surjeet Kumar and senior engineer Vishal Bansal have been booked under sections 22, 7 and 9 of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. Section 3 of the SC/ ST Act, 1989 and section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.

On 25 June, a sanitation worker working under the Manglaur municipality died after falling sick while spraying disinfectant to contain the spread of Covid 19. He had not been provided with any PPE for conducting the task.

Others

On 9 June, OIL India’s firefighters Durlov Gogoi and Tikeswar Gohain died at the site of the blaze at Baghjan oil well blowout in Assam’s Tinsukia district. 

On 14 June, private security guards Amit (22) and Sunil (24), were beaten to death while on night duty in the premises of a company building in Narela. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

On 12 June, Shobhana (51), a health worker of Thiruvananthapuram General hospital was run over by a speeding motorbike and killed near Akkulam bridge while she was on Covid duty.

On 17 June, Balajee Krishnakumar (43), a seafarer died of a cardiac arrest after being stranded since June with 168 crew members, on a ship docked at UK’s Tilbury Port. Balajee, from Tamil Nadu, was in a depressed state and was desperate to see his family. He and the crew have been repeatedly sending repatriation requests to the government of India.

On 20 June, Davinder Kumar (52), a Railways employee died on being crushed under a train at platform no. 7 of Ambala Cantonment station in Haryana.

On 27 June, E Velmurugan(41), a cameraman working for a Tamil TV channel died of Covid 19 that he contracted while covering his assignment. His family has been compensated with an amount of 5 lakhs by CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
