Maharashtra: Government hikes minimum wages for Shops and Establishment workers after nine years

25 July 2019: The Maharashtra Government has doubled the minimum wages for workers employed in shops and establishments after 9 years. According to the Minimum Wages Act, minimum wages need to be revised every 5 years as per the recommendations of the Minimum Wages Advisory Board. However, the revision in Maharashtra was delayed because the government did not constitute the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee over the last 9 years. Minimum wage revision for 32 industries is still pending in the state.

The revised minimum wages will benefit employees of over 10 lakh shops and establishments covered under the Act. Workers will be entitled to the following minimum pay from August, 2019:

 Government introduces Two Labour Codes in Lok Sabha

23 July 2019: The Minister of Labour and Employment, Santosh Gangwar introduced the Code on Wages and Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions in the Lok Sabha. The Code on Wages combines and amends four existing laws – the Payment of Wages Act, the Minimum Wages Act, the Payment of Bonus Act and the Equal Remuneration Act. The Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions combines and amends 13 existing laws – the Factories Act, the Contract Labour Act, the Interstate Migrant Workmen Act, the Dock Workers Act, the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, the Plantation Labour Act, the Motor Transport Workers Act, the Cine Workers and Cinema Theatre Workers Act, the Beedi and Cigar Workers Act, the Working Journalists and other Newspaper Employees Act.

Central Trade Unions have called for a country-wide general strike against the proposed Bills on 2 August 2019.

Chhattisgarh: Government increases retirement age of industrial workers from 58 to 60 years

23 July 2019: The Chhattisgarh government issued Government Order (G.O) under the Chhattisgarh Industrial Employment (Standing Order) Act, 1961, and the Chhattisgarh Industrial Employment (Standing Order) Rule, 1963, increasing the retirement age of industrial workers from the existing 58 years to 60 years. The order will be applicable from 12 August 2019.
