Sanitation:
4 April: 2 workers – Dharmendra Singh (32) and Vivek Pangade (26), were killed and another worker, Dinesh Chauhan fell unconscious of asphyxiation while segregating solid waste from a septic tank at Vedach village in the Bharuch district, Gujarat.
17 April: 5 workers – Nizamuddin Alis, Mohammad Samiyullah Islam, Umar Farooq, Mirazul Islam and Sharafat Ali died and 3 others, Hasan Ali, Md. Karibullah and Hafizullah all migrants from West Bengal were severely injured while working at Sri Ulka LLB, a fish processing industry located in Mangaluru Special Economic Zone, Karnataka. The workers were cleaning the 20-feet deep waste water tank when one of them fell inside and fell unconscious, while others who followed to rescue him also got trapped. Police have arrested the company’s production manager Ruby Joseph, area manager Kubher Gade, supervisor Mohammed Anwar and labour safety supervisor Farooq for flouting various safety norms.
19 April: 4 workers – Surendra Kumar (28), Mahender Singh (25), Rajesh (26) and Rahul Kumar (27), were killed of asphyxiation when they entered a 50 feet manhole to check the motor installed in the sewage treatment plant at Budhan Khera village in Haryana. Police have booked the contractor – Rajesh under Section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 9 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Haryana seeking a detailed report on the incident.
21 April: 3 workers – Saravana Kumar (30), Siva Kumar (45) and Lakshman (45), were killed after inhaling toxic gases upon entering a 30 feet deep sewer tank to change a motor in Mazhaganthan, Tamil Nadu. An FIR had been registered against Vijay Anandan, the owner and 2 other employees of VGR, the company which undertook the contract.
27 April: Abdul Salam (18), a waste picker died after felling into a sewer tank while he was collecting plastic waste around the area in Ganga Toli, Bawana, Delhi. The opening of the sewer tank had no lid or covering.
28 April: Sunil (31) and Mukesh, both migrant workers from Bihar, died of asphyxiation while carrying out maintenance work in a sewer pipeline in Bhiwani, Haryana. They were not provided any protective equipment including safety harness, oxygen cylinder, mask, gloves, etc. for the work.
Manufacturing
11 April: 6 migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh, Parasnath Yadav, Jaydeep Bamroliya, Rajubhai Vasava, Punit Mohanto, Tirath Gadari and Ratan Kushvaha, were killed after a reactor in the distillation unit exploded leading to a massive fire at Om Organics in Dahej GDIC in Bharuch, Gujarat. Police have registered an FIR.
13 April: 9 workers – Nageswar Rao (46), K Joseph (26), Munawar Das (25), Undra Pati Krishna (34), Boppidi Kiran (35), Ravi Das (40), Manoj Kumar (25), Suvaas Ravi Das (32) and Abhudas Ravi Das (27) were killed, and 13 workers sustained severe injuries after the reactor unit exploded at Porus Laboratories private limited, a chemical manufacturing factory at Akkireddyguden village, Andhra Pradesh. Following the explosion the safety sirens and emergency hooters did not fucntion resulting in delayed response by workers and resulted in serious injuries. Police have filed a case under Sections 337, 338 and 304-II of the Indian Penal Code.
25 April: Veeraiah (35), died, and 6 others, Mahender, Venkateshwarlu(44), Sai Kumar, Seetharamulu (40) and Veera Swamy (40), were injured after massive fire broke out in the boiler tube in the 500 MW power generation unit due to excessive heating at Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant, Telangana.
25 April: 3 workers, Ashish Hamirbhai Solanki (25), Rahul Jasabhai Pampaniya (22) and Amarnath Shivdhara Vishwakarma (30), died in an accident at the chemical bank of Hi-Bond Cement factory at Rajkot, Gujarat.
30 April: Mohabbatsinh Parmar (55) died in a blast while operating an aluminium die casting boiler at Alpha metal Industries at Naroda GDIC in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Construction
23 April: 2 workers, Naseem (35) and Bilal (40), died, and 6 workers, Gulfaraz, Aslam, Armaan, Mushaid, Firdaus and Sarfaraz, sustained injured when the under-construction building they were working at collapsed on them in Satyaniketan area, Delhi. Police have filed an FIR against the contractor, Md. Raees, under IPC Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 304 (culpable homicide).
Mining
24 April: Bhim Singh (65), and Sonu (24) was crushed to death in two separate but similar instances when boulders fell on them while at work. Bhim was driving a dumper at pit no 2 while Sonu was operating a drill machine at pit no.12 at Dadam mining hills in Bhiwani, Haryana.
