Workplace Safety Watch – February 2021

01 February: Three construction workers, Chandran (60), Raman (55) and Jayaraman (55), died and three others were injured when a 65-year-old building that they were demolishing collapsed on them in Madurai. The workers did not have any protective gear or equipment while carrying out the demolition work.

01 February: Saurabh Tripathi died and six others were injured when a section of the first floor of the Shadowfax private limited godown collapsed at the Harihar compound in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra.

02 February: Ramsingh Rajput, Uttam Gavariya and Pukhraj Taank died after inhaling toxic gas at a chemical processing unit in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, Police registered an FIR for causing death by negligence against factory owner Ravi Patel and his business partner Mitul Mistry.

04 February: Manikandan died and at least six other workers are feared trapped after crushed stones caved in inside a stone quarry, in Kancheepuram district. Police are investigating whether it is a legal quarry and if safety norms were violated.

06 February: A contract worker Sekar (28) died and one worker was injured while laying drainage pipes in a Metrowater project in Tambram, Chennai when the pit caved-in on them. Police registered a case under Section 304(A) (causing death due to negligence) of the IPC.

09 February: At least three Indian workers were killed and six other workers were missing after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bhutan. The bridge was aimed at linking Haa district with Paro, where the country’s international airport is located. The cause of the collapse was not known immediately.

11 February: Yogesh (25), was killed on the spot while two others were injured while demolishing an old primary school in Malawan area in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah.

12 February: 19 workers were killed and 36 others were injured when a sudden blast in a firecracker factory in Shree Mariamman FireWorks in Achankulam, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu caused the entire building to collapse. Police booked a case against six persons including the absconding owner and the lessee of the unit, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50,000 have been given on behalf of the factory as compensation and assistance for funeral rites respectively, to each of the deceased’s families.

12 February: Shivram Kale (40) was electrocuted to death while carrying out repair work at a house in Malad, Mumbai after getting exposed to a live wire without being provided safety equipment. Police booked the owner of the house on charges of causing death by negligence.

13 February: Insan Ali and Saiful Ali died and seven others were injured when portion of a Road Under Bridge collapsed on them at a railway construction site in Guwahati.

14 February: Murugan (42), Bhakyaraj (40) and Arumugam (45) died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sceptic tank in Katrambakkam near Sriperumbudur. The Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the victims.

14 February: Harikrishna Kushwaha (32) died and another two were seriously injured after a machine fell on them during well-digging work in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur district.

15 February: V. Vijay (23), a load man working with a marble company, was crushed to death when a marble slab fell on him from a lorry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) campus. Police registered a case and was launched a search for the driver.

15 February: Sagar died while trying to save himself from a falling lift carrying materials that had malfunctioned at a construction plot in Sector 57, Gurgaon. Police filed an FIR under IPC sections 283, 302A and 34 against the construction agency and the owner of the plot.

15 February: Vishal Mali (26) was crushed to death by a crashing lift after its cable broke while working at an under-construction building in Cherlapally, Hyderabad.

17 February: Gopi God (32) was killed after an empty ropeway goods trolly carrying the labourer crashed into a tower and fell from a height of about 60 feet in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district. Police said that the goods trolly was not meant to ferry people and registered a case of accidental death.

17 February: Ravi (52) was asphyxiated to death and another worker rendered unconsious while cleaning the well of a house in Chennai’s Alapakkam due to a leak from a sewerage pipeline along the well.

21 February: A 30-year-old woman died and six other workers were injured, two of them seriously, in a blast at a fan manufacturing unit in Telangana’s Sangareddy district. The blast occurred when a fan condenser was being heated in the oven.

23 February: Two workers were killed, five others went missing, and over 30 incurred burn injuries in the fire incident at a factory of United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) at Jhagadia GIDC in Gujarat’s Bharuch district. The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health has given the company a closure notice. The company announced that it will compensate the families of the deceased and affected workers.

23 February: Six workers died and another was injured in an explosion at a quarry site storing gelatin sticks illegally and in an irregular manner in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district. Two persons have been arrested in the case and an inquiry has been set up.

23 February: Bala Kumar (24), Vijay Kumar (25) and Kumar Swamy (28) died and another was critically injured due to a huge blast at a firecracker factory near Ghoghadipur village in Karnal, Haryana which engulfed the whole factory in flames. An inquiry committee has been formed to ascertain the cause of the explosion.

23 February: Two construction workers died after a trolley loaded with iron rods and construction material overturned at a construction site in Petbasheerabad, Hyderabad. The trolly driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to go down a slope to unload construction material.

24 February: Umesh Dhake (44) was killed after he was hit on the head and neck by an arm of a robotic machine that fell on him at Automotive Stampings & Assemblies Ltd (Asal) at Chakan, Maharashtra. Police registered an offence under section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC against five officials of the company.

25 February: Jahangir Alam, Ali Liyakat Ali, Sabir Hossain and Md Alamgir – all in their 20s, died and three others were rescued after they were trapped in a manhole during the construction of a drainage system at Kudhghat in Kolkata. The water supply to the drainage was not turned off when the workers climbed down to the manhole which swept them away.

26 February: K. Santhosh (35) and K. Raja (40) died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sewage tank inside Fort St. George, which houses the Secretariat in Chennai. The police booked a case against the contractor under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, and Section 304A of the IPC (Causing death by negligence).

27 February: Upchand Kumar (35) was charred to death and one worker was injured after a massive fire broke out at an illegal factory in North Delhi’s Pratap Nagar. Police registered a case and called the owner of the building for questioning.
