Kerala: Contract workers’ strike at Fertilizer and Chemicals Travancore ends in success

29 July, 2021: The day-long protest of contract workers at Fertilizer and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) has averted the management’s attempt of replacing unionised contract workers with agency workers on short-term contracts on lower wages. As a result of workers’ prompt action and solidarity, FACT has agreed to retain contract workers on existing wages (Rs 19,500 per month) and leave benefits.

Defence workers hold countrywide protest against corporatisation of ordnance factories

23 July, 2021: Defence sector workers from across the country joined forces to protest against the Centre’s bid to corporatise 41 existing ordnance factories despite the government having promulgated the Essential Defence Services Ordinance aimed at deterring defence sector workers from striking work. Workers have also been opposing allowing of 100% FDI in the defence sector.

Maharashtra: 580 contract Safai Karmcharis win permanency after 25-year long struggle

9 July, 2021: The Industrial Court in Mumbai has ordered Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to extend the same pay and service benefits to 580 contract Safai workers as their permanent peers. The Industrial Court found that the 580 workers were employed under sham and bogus work contracts to deny them their rights as workers. The case was filed in 1996; during the 25-year-long struggle, four workers died on duty due to the hazardous nature of work and the lack of safety equipment.

UP: Workers of 108 Emergency services strike work, fearing job loss

28 July, 2021: 108 and 112 Emergency Ambulance Service providers in Uttar Pradesh have gone on strike fearing job loss and wage cut after the government floated a new tender for rendering the services. There are over 19,000 ambulance workers across the state’s 75 districts — all employed on contract. The workers have been long demanding a revision of pay and regularisation of services but have not received any benefits. They are lauded as frontline workers even as the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic. But the insurance scheme announced by the Prime Minister for frontline workers was not extended to them.

Punjab: Aanganwadi workers protest in Jalandhar, demand immediate payment of dues under Poshan Abhiyan

15 July, 2021: The Poshan Abhiyan Scheme was launched in March 2018 under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). As per the scheme anganwadi workers were to be paid Rs 1,500 monthly — Rs 900 by the Centre and Rs 600 by the state government. However, since October 2018, the state government has not deposited its share. Aanganwadi workers held a day-long protest in Jalandhar demanding the government immediately releases due funds.
