Workplace Safety Watch – COVID Issue

On 28 February, four factory workers were killed and 28 were injured in a chemical factory blast in Haryana’s Bahadurgarh. The injured include five children and twelve women. The Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia of 2 lakhs for the family members of the deceased.

On 2 March, Gaurang Gowda (50), who was not provided with safety gear for carrying out house repairs in Mumbai’s Chembur, died of an electric shock. The owner of the house has been booked for negligence.

On 7 March, John Fredo, a contract labourer engaged by BSNL to lay a cable by digging a pit, was hit by a car and fell to death in the pit at  Ambalammukku in Thiruvananthapuram. The car was being driven by Ajayaghosh, a businessman. A case under Section 304 and 279 and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 for drunken driving has been registered.

On 11 March, Tariq Ahmad Dar, a worker of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Ltd, was killed in an electric shock while repairing a transmission line in the Zakura area of Srinagar. Investigation of negligence by the PDC is underway.

On 27 March, Naresh Shinde (50), an ambulance driver died after being stopped at the Talegaon phata on the Mumbai-Pune highway and beaten by a policeman on duty when he was carrying a patient from Thane to Ahmednagar district.
