Haryana: Sanitation workers in Haryana continue strike
More than 30,000 sanitary municipal workers in Haryana remain on strike after walking out on 9 May demanding regularisation and improved working conditions. Garbage continues to pile up all over the state.
The main demands of the strikers, a majority of them being women, are regularisation of about 20,000 contractual employees, equal pay for equal work, a hike in monthly minimum wage from Rs 10,000 to Rs. 15,000, implementation of cashless medical facilities, increasing allowances of both permanent and contractual employees, risk allowance and better safety equipment for those engaged in cleaning sewers. These were all the election promises of the ruling BJP in their manifesto
Discussions between the sanitation workers’ union, Nagar Palika Karmachari Sangh and the municipal authorities remain deadlocked. Strikers have vowed to continue their action until their demands are met.
