03 January: Amit Das (16), a child labour was crushed to death after falling in a wheat grinder at a flour mill in Nahargarh, Rajasthan. Police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and one under the Juvenile Justice Act against the employer.
10 January: Shek Angar (34), a construction worker, was killed and several others were to be trapped underneath soil that sank at the construction site of Vegas Mall in Dwarka Sector 12, New Delhi. No Police cases had reportedly been filed and no compensation yet announced for the victim’s family.
08 January: Chunnilal (24) died and his brother Matadeen was injured after being hit by a boulder while engaged in mining activity in Pahra village, Kabrai, Uttar Pradesh. No Police cases had reportedly been filed and no compensation yet announced for the victim’s family.
10 January: Mahendra Mali, a construction worker, died and six others were Injured after a segment of concrete of the under-construction Biju Setu collapsed at Umerkote, Odisha. The Development commissioner directed the Nabarangpur Collector to lodge criminal cases against the contractor Ashis Biswal, SDO and Junior Engineer and arrest them immediately.
06 January: Four contractual workers, Ganesh Chandra Paila (55), Rabindra Sahu (59), Abhimanyu Sah (33) and Bramhananda Panda (51), died and six others fell ill due to a toxic gas leak at the coal chemical unit of the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha. Families of all four victims were given Rs 10 lakh in compensation by the contractor and a permanent job was offered to one member of each family.
17 January: Pinki Dahari (28) and Pulin Suranda (35) were killed and four others injured when a huge stack of bricks collapsed on them at a kiln in Santipur, West Bengal. Police is investigating the matter to ascertain irregularities on the part of the kiln owners.
21 January: Six labourers were killed in a high-intensity explosion in a truck carrying explosives in a stone quarry at Hunasodu, Karnataka. The State government has given Rs. 5 lakh compensation to the families of each victim. The mine was operating illegally and unsafe storage and transport of dangerous and explosive materials led to the mishap.
21 January: Five contractual workers, Mahendra Prakash Ingle (30), Pratik Sanjay Paste (21), Sushilkumar Pande (26), Ramashankar Chotelal Harijan (21) and Vipinlal Bahadur Saroj (31), suffocated to death after a fire broke out at the Serum Institute of India (SII) plant in Pune. The company announced Rs. 25 lakh compensation to kin of the deceased. A case of accidental fire under section 174 of CrPC.
22 January: Six workers, Ali Hussain (40), Dilwar Hussain (35), Moqbul Hussain (45), Abdul Chobur (30), Jalaluddin (28) and one still unidentified, fell 150 feet to their deaths after the machine they were using to dig a tunnel broke at a coal mine near Rymbai village in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Police has launched an investigation into the accident, however no compensation has been announced till now.
21 January: Four workers, Lakhan Das, Kaushalya Devi, Mahendra Das and Chandra Das, were killed and two others injured when the roof of an illegal mica mine caved in Jharkhand’s Koderma district. Police registered an FIR against the employer.
26 January: M Manikandan (33) fell to his death while fixing asbestos sheets on the roof of a newly constructed house in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Police have registered a case of suspicious death under section 174 of the CrPC.
28 January: Two construction workers, K Periyasamy (58) and P Murugan (52), died of asphyxiation when they entered the sump of an under-construction house in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.
28 January: Deepak Singh, died after falling into a deep pit at the construction site of a bridge under Biju Setu Yojana in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Locals staged a dharna demanding compensation and strict action against those responsible.
28 January: Lal Ahmed (24) and Rasheed (30), were asphyxiated to death and another was hospitalised while cleaning a deep manhole in Kalaburagi, Karnataka. Rs. 5 lakh compensation was announced for the families of each victim.
