Construction
On 13 May, Ketan Bahirat (45) died after falling from the 15th floor of the ‘Reliance Building’, Continum Complex in Chunabatti, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Ketan who was working as a technician was carrying out maintenance activities of an elevator when he fell into the elevator shaft.
On 27 May, 3 construction workers Durgesh (26), Arjun Singh (32) and Sukan (25) died when a mound of mud collapsed on them in Belagavi, Karnataka while they were working on the construction of a bridge.
On 5 April, 2 workers; Rahul and Rakesh died and 12 other workers were injured when an under-construction building collapsed in Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru, Karnataka. The workers were pouring concrete mix on the roof when its support collapsed leading to workers getting buried under a heavy concrete mix. The workers were employed by a private contractor in a ₹22-crore project overseen by APMC Yeshwantpur. The police have registered a case under IPC Section 304-A (causing accidental death due to negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
On 23 April, 2 workers Kishore Kumar (23) and Ajay Malik (32) died and another worker Bhanu Pratap Mehta sustained serious injuries when they fell from the 13th floor of an under-construction building of ATS group in Greater Noida, NCR. An enquiry commission has been constituted under the Deputy Collector by the District Magistrate to look into safety lapses. The construction site lacked adequate safety provisions and the workers were not provided with safety belts and helmets.
On 15 April 1 worker Shahdad Alil Ansari (32) died and 2 others Shyamlal Jaiswar (50) and Shahid Ali Khan (35) were injured when an iron scaffolding broke at an under-construction site in Dharavi, Mumbai, Maharashtra. The scaffolding installed on a 21st floor collapsed as it was loosely fastened due to negligence of the contractor hired by Shirke Constructions. The police have registered a FIR against the contractor and the company engineer under IPC Sections 304(A) (causing accidental death due to negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
Manufacturing
On 5 May, Ranjeet Kumar died and 4 others sustained grievous injuries after molten metal fell on the workers at the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) of the Godawari Power and Ispat Limited in the Siltara industrial area, Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
The crucible in which the molten metal was being transported accidently titled killing the workers who were working in the area below.
On 12 May, 3 workers Dattatray Ghule (24), Raghunath Gorai (50) and Prabhakar Khadse (57) asphyxiated to death after inhaling poisonous gases in a chemical unit in Esquire Chemicals, Tarapur MIDC, Boisar, Maharashtra.
The workers were working without any safety gear when the gas leak in the factory occurred.
On 16 May, Chand a worker working as a power press operator in PSR Auto Components Pvt Ltd. in Faridabad, New Delhi succumbed to injuries after a piece of iron broke away from the machine and lodged itself in his abdomen. The owner and the supervisor had ignored the repeated complaints regarding the malfunctioning of the machine.
Police have lodged an FIR against the owner S.R. Kalra and supervisor Arun of the factory under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 304-A (causing death by negligence).
On 19 May, 3 workers Dayan Thammaiah, 45, Anil, 44, and Kavitha, 36 were electrocuted to death while working in a coffee estate in Doddapulikotu village in Napoklu, Karnataka. The workers were instructed to carry a metal ladder to prune trees when they came in contact with an overhead live wire. The police have registered a case.
On 20 May, 2 workers Mehtab Babumiya Mulla (36) and Udayacharan Laliraj died in a boiler blast at Omax, a fertiliser manufacturer in Latur, Maharashtra.
On 22 May, 2 workers Mobin Khan (35) and Bilal Khan (30) died after inhaling toxic gases while working in a flour mill in Lawrence Road, Keshav Puram Area, New Delhi. The workers entered into a tank for cleaning purposes that had remained closed for several months. The workers were not provided with any safety equipment. The police have arrested the owner of the mill, Paras and the supervisor Anoop under section 304-A (causing death by negligence).
On 3 April Madhu Ram (21) died when crushed in a plastic compacting machine in a plastic waste processing factory in Maidan Garhi, Delhi. While operating the machine, a shaft fell down and crushed the worker from shoulder to chest. Police arrested the owner of the factory Manish Kumar Gupta under IPC Section 304-A (causing accidental death due to negligence).
On 9 April MS Rajput died and 8 other workers were severely injured in an explosion in the Ordinance Factory Cawnpore (OFC) in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A nitrogen gas cylinder attached to a light field gun (LFG) that was being tested, caused the explosion.
On 22 April, Puneet (20) a lift operator died after getting stuck in the lift of a factory in the Jhilmil Industrial Area, New Delhi. The worker was loading raw materials into the lift when his head got stuck in-between the iron grill and door of the lift. Workers have complained of lift malfunction to the owner but to no avail. Police have registered a case under IPC sections 304-(A) (causing death by negligence) and 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery).
Sanitation
On 1 May, 3 workers; Pandu (46), Vinay (18) and Deepak (32) suffocated to death while cleaning a sewer tank at a private banquet hall in Sidharth Enclave in Sonepat, Haryana. The 2 workers had entered the tank to rescue their colleague who had entered the tank first and fell unconscious.
On 2 May, 2 workers Aslam (30) and Hamid (20) died while laying sewage lines in Salarpur, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The workers got stuck while laying a sewer line 12 feet under a when a part of the structure gave away leading to sewage rushing from a canal into the narrow pipe. Both were employed by the Noida Authority under contract. Police have filed a FIR against the contractor under IPC section 304-A (causing death by negligence).
On 3 May, 3 workers Sunil Chavriya (30), Pradeep Sarvay (25) and Bika Bumbak (25) died after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning a septic tank of ‘Anand View’, a residential building in Nallasopara, Mumbai, Maharashtra. The workers had entered the tank after midnight without any safety gears, masks or gloves. The police have registered a case and booked the builders, Ramesh Bhora, Suresh Jain, Pushkar Jain, Dharmesh Jain, Vinod Jain, Nandalal Dubey and Tejprakash Mehta along with the supervisor Abu Sheikh under sections 304-A (causing death due to negligence) and 34 (criminal act done by several with common intention) of IPC.
On 7 May, 2 workers; Deepak (30) and Ganesh Saha (35) suffocated to death while 3 others Sher Singh (40), Rambir (33) and Rajesh Saha (40) sustained grievous injuries while cleaning a septic tank in Prem Nagar colony, Rohini, New Delhi. The workers fell unconscious while cleaning the 10 feet deep tank. The owner of the house Gulam Mustafa has been arrested by the police under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and section 3 (punishments for offences of atrocities) of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and sections of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
On 10 May, 3 sanitation workers; Amit Puhal (20), Aman Badal (21) and Ajay Bumbak (24) died while cleaning a septic tank and 5 others were hospitalised at Pride Presidency Luxuria housing society in Dokhali, Thane, Maharashtra. The workers were employed to clean 4 septic tanks at night. No safety equipment was provided to the workers. The contractors Vaibhav Patil and Jeetendra Khait along with the 3 office-bearers of the society, chairman-Suman Narsana, secretary- Harbajhan Singh Bhatia and treasurer-Sunil Kaiche, have been arrested by the police under section 304 (A) (death due to negligence) of the IPC and section 7 (prohibition of persons from engagement or employment for hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks) and section 9 (penalty for contravention of section 7) of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
On 12 April, sanitation worker Veeru (25) died and two others were seriously injured after inhaling poisonous gases in Kurali, Chandigarh, Punjab. The workers were cleaning a sewage line without any safety gear. Employed on contract by the Kurali Municipal Corporation, the workers have not been paid their wages for the last 3 months. Police have registered a case under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
On 14 April, 4 sanitation workers; Farooq Ahmed (22), Anwar Hussain (24), Dilwar Hussain (23) and Abu (22) died after inhaling poisonous gases while cleaning an effluent tank in a textile washing unit in Karuppagoundenpalayam, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. The police has registered a case against the owner Jayakumar under IPC sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 304A (causing death by negligence).
On 14 April, 2 sanitation workers; Shiv Kumar (35) and Aslam (33) died after inhaling poisonous gases while cleaning a septic tank in Narshingpur, Gurgaon, Haryana. Employed to clean the septic tank of automobile company Sunbeam Auto Private Limited, the workers were not provided with any protective gear.
On 27 April, Gafoor Pasha (40) and Aftab Pasha (28) died while cleaning a contaminated well in the Bismillah Tea Stall at K.G. Halli, Bangalore, Karnataka. The workers were provided no safety equipment. Police have booked the tea stall owner Naveed, the building owner Jaleel and the contractor Aseef under sections of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, and IPC Section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence).
Others
On 9 May, 5 workers Rakesh Sukhdevji Riyad (22), Dharmaraj Sukharam Badiyasar (25), Rakesh Bugaram Meghwal (20), Suraj Paruji Sharma (25) and Dhiraj Omprakash Chandak (25) died after a massive fire engulfed a saree godown at the Rajyog Wholesale Saree Depot in Uruli Devachi, Maharashtra. The workers were trapped inside the 2-storey building as the godown had no emergency exit and the owners had locked the only entrance-exit door to the building. The police have booked the owners of the godown Bhavarlal Hajarimal Prajapati, Sunil Nandkishor Bajaj and Suresh Ramaram Jakhadunder sections 304-II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 34 (criminal act done by several with common intention) of the IPC.
On 10 April, 10 NREGA workers; Anuradha (30), Bheemamma Pallegadda (34), Galiguttu Buddamma (36), Bodi Laxmi (32), Kummari Laxmi(33), Mangamma Marati (30), Sakali Ananthamma (42), Palle Gaddi Seenamma (55), Barella Ananthamma (60) and Cherlapally Laxmi (42) were buried alive when an embankment collapsed in Tileru, Narayanpet, Telangana.
On 13 April, 2 workers; Sudarshan and Shafiq died and 8 others were injured when mud heap collapsed in Pulakeshinagar,Bangalore, Karnataka. The workers were digging a storm water drain undertaken by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
On 19 April, 5 workers; Velu (38),Thanikachalam (50), Ravichandran (49), Jayamurugan (25), and Pichandi (51) died and another worker Manickam (52) sustained grievous injuries while digging a well in Alathur village, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. The rope ladder on which workers stood had collapsed causing their fall into the well. No safety equipment was provided for workers.
On 27 April, crane operator Dravin Rai (28) died when crane loading coal caught fire at the Haldia port in East Midnapore, West Bengal. Jumping from a height of 50 feet to escape the fire, the worker died on impact with the ground.
