Workplace Safety Watch – February-March 2022

Sanitation

10 March: Sayyad Rauf (35), Ganpati Viraswamy (45) and Annadurai Velmil (40) were killed of asphyxiation when they entered to clean a septic tank adjacent to a public toilet in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The police have registered a case against the caretaker and contractor of the public toilet.

15 March: Lalit (50), a cardboard factory worker, died after inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a 15-foot deep pit without any safety equipment at Dateri village in Uttar Pradesh.

22 March: 2 contract workers, Raju Janjarla and Subhash Khandalkarand, and a staff Sushil Korde were killed of asphyxiation while Shankar Andugla and Pramod Vabhitkar got severely injured after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank near sewage pump house in a Western Coalfields Limited residential township in Ballarpur. The workers were not provided any safety equipment.

29 March: Bacchu Singh (54), Pintu (30) and Suraj Kumar Sahni (55) contract workers employed by MTNL were killed of asphyxiation at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Delhi while laying wires in the sewers. The deaths could have been prevented if contract workers were provided safety gears by MTNL.

29 March: Hanuman Korpakwad (25) and Suraj Madvi (22) died of asphyxiation while cleaning the septic tank of a housing society in Thane, Maharashtra.

29 March: Nitesh (25) and Yashdev (35), migrants of Uttar Pradesh died after they fell into a six-foot-deep pit while working at a sewage treatment plant in East Delhi’s Kondli area. Police had registered a case and booked K P Tewari (plant-in-charge), Raj Kumar (supervisor), and Mohammod Haroon (shift-in-charge) under IPC Sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and Section 9 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act.

Manufacturing

3 February: Talib Khan (24), a migrant worker from Uttarakhand, died after falling from an under-construction shed inside the BHEL campus in Govindpura, Madhya Pradesh.

4 February: Hari Om Upadhyay (55) and Sundar Singh (22), were killed while 3 others sustained injuries after a reactor exploded at Abhilasa Pharma in Ankleshwar Industrial Area, Gujarat.

18 February: Sintu Yadav (27), Santosh Chauhan ( 27) and Sanjay Chauhan (48), contract workers employed at the Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) were killed and 4 other workers got injured due to poisonous gas leak while maintenance job at the Basic Oxygen Furnace was underway.

20 February: D Arun Oraon(25) and B Baljit Oraon( 20), migrant workers from Jharkhand were killed, and 3 other workers, K.Ragupathi(53), Maridas(45) and Javed(20), sustained injured after boiler exploded at Bismi Fisheries Private Limited at Thoduvai village, Tamil Nadu. Police have registered a case under IPC Section 337 (negligence endangering human lives) and 304A (causing death by negligence), and the unit was sealed pending an enquiry by the Indian Boiler Regulation (IBR) team.

Construction

3 February: 4 workers, Sohail Md. (22), Md. Samar (30), Mobid Alam(40) and Majrum Hussain (35) were killed, and 6 other workers Md. Alam, Md. Ibrahim, Md. Fayim, Md. Kurban, Md. Rafiq Alam and Md. Sahil sustained grave injuries when mesh made of iron rods for the slab collapsed on them at the under-construction Bluegrass Business Park in Yerwada, Pune. Police have arrested the contractor of the site and the managers under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 336 (rash and negligent act endangering life), Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by endangering life).

12 February: Kapoora (23), died after a brick fell on his head while he was working at an under-construction building in Laxmipuri, Punjab.

14 February: Dilip (22), a daily wage worker, died after falling from a high wall at the under-construction Chambal riverfront in Kota, Rajasthan.

14 February: Suresh Laxman Pawar (45), died of falling from the second floor of a residential building while painting its outer wall. Police have registered a case if causing death due to negligence against the four housing society residents after finding that the employers did not provide any safety harness or other protective gear.

18 March: 4 migrant workers from West Bengal – Faijul Mondal (25), Noujesh Ali (32), Noor Amin Mondal (30) and Khudus Mondal (35), died, and 3 others, Shamsu (35), Farook Mondal (18) and Jaibul Mondal (25) sustained injured as the earth caved in on them at a construction site at NeST Electronic City, Kochi. None of the workers were provided any safety gear.

24 March: Dalbir Singh (49), a contract worker, was killed after a metal jack pipe fell on his head from the 25th floor of the under-construction building in Sector 71, Gurugram, Haryana. The police have registered an FIR against the project manager under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 304A.

26 March: Construction workers N. Satyam(38) and P Yerramnaidu(40) got severely injured after they came in contact with high-tension wires while working in Venkatapuram area in Visakhapatnam, Telangana.

Others

17 February: Dablu Hari (45), a worker of Eastern Coal Field Limited, died while another worker got injured when the roof of a mine collapsed while working in JK Nagar Colliery at Raniganj, West Bengal.

24 March: Bhavani (37), a cardamom estate worker, died after a tree branch fell on her while working in a private cardamom estate in Idukki, Kerala.

26 March: Project Manager Jayanta Hazarika, Deputy Manager Anupam Saikia and contrac worker Dimaral Jahari of Kopili Hydel Project of North East Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) were killed due to a landslide while they were walking up to the sluice gates of the dam.
