Workplace Safety Watch – May 2021

Construction

01 May: Jalandhar Sadhu Kamble (37) died after he fell while working on the third floor of an under-construction hotel building in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur city.

02 May: Indra Kumar (48), died and nine others were injured when a newly constructed godown wall collapsed on them in Adloor Yellareddy village, Telangana. The godowns were being constructed by former MLC Arikela Narsareddy. All workers had migrated from Chattisgarh in search of work.

03 May: SK Saboor (35) fell to his death while fitting pipers on the third floor of a newly constructed apartment building in Bhuvaneshawari-nagar in Bangalore. Police booked the building owner, officials from GAIL, and PEC’s owner and manager under charges of accidental death due to criminal negligence.

03 May: Mohammad Iqbal Dar (30) was crushed to death by a running train while working on an IRCON railway construction project near ’44 point’ in Kakapora, in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Police initiated proceedings under 174 CrPC.

07 May: Dhurkesh Ramlal (19) died after the concrete roof of an under-construction police quarters in Pudupet, Chennai collapsed on top of him.

15 May: Mushtaq Baniya died after a cement plate fell on him during construction work on Z-Morh tunnel, connecting Kashmir and Ladakh, in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

22 May: Md Saleem Pasha (27) fell to his death while working on the fifth floor of an under-construction building at Kattelmandi in Moosarambagh, Hyderabad. Police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the brother of the deceased.

24 May: Swarop Yadav (35) died after a mud heap fell on him while constructing a 25-feet deep well, under MNREGA, in Goddaud village of Jharkhand’s Chatra district.

25 May: Mohammad Nazre Alam (24) was electrocuted to death while working at the site of Mumbai Metro line 5, between Thane and Devji Nagar. Police booked the site supervisor and crane operator under IPC section 304(a) for causing death due to negligence.

31 May: Santosh Kanhar, a construction worker, was asphyxiated to death while building a sceptic tank at an under-construction house in Pitabari village of Kandhamal, Odisha. After seeing Santosh lose consciousness, the house owner Sanjay Pradhan went down the pit to rescue the worker, but was asphyxiated to death also.

Manufacturing

02 May: An unidentified worker died due to a major fire at an ink manufacturing unit, Balaji Polycoat, at Turbhe in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

07 May : Devojit Mili (33) was electrocuted to death, and another was injured while engaged by a telecom network provider to erect 5G towers at Chongchiin village in Henglep subdivision, Manipur. Police registered a case of unnatural death.

07 May: Ansh Rajbhar (13) was electrocuted to death while working as a helper in a company at Mahape MIDC of Navi Mumbai. Police registered a case of accidental death.

11 May: Sk. Sharif, P. Srinu, Tirupataiah and Tirupataiah died, and many fell sick due to a gas leak at Venkata Narayana Active Ingredients factory in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. In July, 2020 a blast here had killed three and severely injured four workers.

13 May: R Rajkumar (42), K Ganabathy (25), V Visesharaj (25) and S Sabitha (35) died, and 13 others were injured due to a boiler explosion at a pesticide manufacturing unit at SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. Management announced compensation of Rs. 15 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and injured respectively, and the state govt announced Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 1 lakh compensation respectively.

23 May: Mohan Hawle (57) died while carrying out post-cyclone repair work on the roof of a powerloom unit in Thane’s Gayatri Nagar. Police booked three people, including the factory owner and his son, under IPC sections 304(a) and 34 for not providing proper safety equipment to the worker.

Mining

08 May: At least ten workers were killed, and others were injured in a blast at a limestone quarry at Mamillapalle village in Kadapa district which functioning without prior permission. The blast happened when a consignment of gelatin sticks, transported without permission, was being unloaded from a vehicle. State government announced compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹5 lakh to each of the injured. Police arrested one of the mine owners and one of the mine workers in the case.

Sanitation

27 May: Krishna (21), a sanitation worker working for a private contractor of the Greater Noida authority, was asphyxiated to death while cleaning a sewer in the Surajpur area without any safety equipment. The authority placed the blame on the private contractor, and said that the act didn’t amount to manual scavenging. Police registered an FIR under IPC section 304 against the contractor and the site incharge.

31 May: Mohammad Idarish and Mohammad Iqbal were asphyxiated to death after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning a sewer, near Beur jail in Patna, working for the L&T construction company under the Namami Ganga project.
