Workplace Safety Watch – July, 2021

01 July: Dhramik, Ishwar and Rajesh were asphyxiated to death while inspecting a recently laid sewage line for blockages in the Dokmardi locality of Silvassa, Dadra Nagar Haveli.

06 July: Vikas Naik (33) fell to his death while engaged in repair work on the roof of the electrical wing at the Sirpur Paper Mills manufacturing plant in Kaghaznagar, Telangana.

06 July: Alim Mohammad (31) and Ananta Roy (24) were asphyxiated to death and two others fell ill while working inside an under-construction septic tank being built at a house in Nathuapara on the outskirts of West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri town.

15 July: Somarajan (56), Rajan (36), Sivaprasad (22) and Manoj (32) were asphyxiated to death while cleaning a newly dug 120-ft well at an under-construction house in Kovilmukku, Perumpuzha in Kerala.

18 July: Harpal (22) and Gagan (30) were asphyxiated to death while doing cleaning work in a sewer line in Sector 62 of Mohali, Punjab.

18 July: Santosh Bandari (27) and Praveen (21) were killed, and five others narrowly escaped, when a concrete mixing vehicle toppled during the construction of a retaining wall near Cherambane in Kodagu, Karnataka. The police registered a case of negligence against the PWD contractor and the vehicle driver.

22 July: Sandhya Devi (24) and Sandhya Rani (34) were electrocuted to death after coming into contact with a low-lying high-tension power line while working at an under-construction house in Bhora Kalan in Bilaspur, Haryana. The police filed an FIR against the house owner for negligence under Section 304A of the IPC.

23 July: Three sanitation workers were asphyxiated to death while going down to work in an under-construction septic tank at Hasanpur in Bihar’s Samastipur district.

23 July: Sadananda, Krishna Reddy and P. Tareni Reddy were asphyxiated to death while removing the shuttering of a new constructed septic tank in Bikrampur, Bhubaneshwar.

Chinmay Anand Mandal (33), Bharat Anand Mandal (30), Anilkumar Nandlal Yadav, Avinash Das (35), Abhay Mistry Yadav (32) and Laxman Mandal (35) were killed after a lift crashed at the under-construction site of Lalit Ambika builders in Mumbai. The police have arrested the contractor and supervisor of the building for negligence and risking the lives of workers.

26 July: Two workers were crushed to death, and six others were injured, after an under-construction iron structure meant to store bulk materials crashed over them at Shree Cement Ltd plant in Balodabazar district, Chhattisgarh.

28 July: Three workers, all between 21 and 25 years of age, died after falling into a tank in Hettich India Furniture Company in Sector 3, Pithampur area of Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district.

30 July: Six migrant labourers from Odisha were charred to death in a fire due to an electrical short circuit at a prawn hatchery in Repalle of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh.
