Amazon delivery workers to go on one-day strike across cities demanding increase in delivery fees and insurance for all workers

24 March 2021: Amazon delivery workers will go on a one-day strike across major cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi-NCR, to protest against the e-commerce company’s decision to lower delivery fees on March 15. Earlier delivery workers were receiving Rs. 35 per parcel, now they get Rs. 10 for small packages and Rs. 15 made through tempos. Workers are demanding Rs. 70-80 for every delivery through tempos and Rs. 20 for small parcels. They are also demanding insurance cover for all delivery workers.

18 March 2021: Employees of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Public Sector Insurance companies, including Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and four General Insurance Companies (GICs) went on consecutive strikes opposing Central government’s proposals of privatisation of the sector as announced in the Budget 2021. The government has proposed privatisation of four PSBs, strategic sale of one GIC, introduction of the initial public offer of LIC and an increase in the permissible FDI limit from 49 per cent to 74 per cent in insurance companies. Bank employees struck work on 15th and 16th March, general insurance employees on 17th March, and LIC employees on 18 March 2021.

Farmer and workers join forces for countrywide strike against newly promulgated anti-people laws and rising inflation

26 March 2021: Farmers’ organisations and trade unions joined forces to hold a countrywide strike (Bharat Bandh) on 26 March 2021 marking the completion of four months of ongoing protest by farmers against the 3 farm laws [The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act], 4 labour codes and the Electricity (Amendment) Act. Farmers have been demanding an unconditional repeal of the 3 farm laws and labour codes and an end to the meteoric rise in the prices of Petrol, Diesel and LPG over the past few months.

Kerala: Indefinite strike by textile workers ends in success, NTC restarts operations at Vijayamohini mills

17 March 2021: The indefinite strike of more than 200 days by workers of National Textile Corporation (NTC)’s Vijayamohini Mills in Thiruvannathapuram ended in success after NTC agreed to restart the mill’s operations on March 31. The 23 spinning mills of the NTC, under the Union Textile Ministry, had remained closed since March 2020, despite the Centre granting permission for factories and industries to open in May last year. The protests at the Vijayamohini mills began in August 2020 after repeated demands fell on deaf years of the management.

Jharkhand: Sanitation workers at MGM Hospital, Jamshedpur go on indefinite strike demanding timely wages and bonus

11 March 2021: Contract Safai workers at the MGM Medical College and Hospital, Jamshedpur went on an indefinite strike demanding timely payment of wages and bonus. Contract workers at the hospital have not been paid wages for the last three months.
