Delhi: High Court pulls up municipal corporations for non-payment of salaries and pensions

21 January 2021: The division bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli while hearing multiple petitions in relation to non-payment of salaries and pensions to the employees of Delhi municipal corporations, held that the right to receive salary and pension is a fundamental right enshrined under the Article 21 of the Constitution, and that paucity of funds cannot be an excuse for non-payment.

NCSC demands status report from Delhi government of compensation paid to kin of safai workers who died while cleaning sewers

21 January 2021: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has asked Delhi government to share the status of payment of the Rs. 10 lakh compensation to families of safai karamcharis who have died while cleaning sceptic tanks and sewers in the city since 1993, as per the directions of the Supreme Court. The Commission also sought details of one-time cash assistance for rehabilitation of manual scavengers and coverage of such households under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Kerala: Labour Department initiates legal action against English Indian Clays Ltd. (ECIL) for denying lay off compensation

04 January 2021: The Labour department initiated legal action against English Indian Clays Ltd. (EICL) for denying lay-off compensation to employees and ordering illegal transfers. ECIL management has been issued a notice under Section 29 of the Industrial Disputes Act. Workers have gone on strike in August 2020 after ECIL halted operations citing shortage of raw materials.
