Madras HC: NLC contract workers cannot strike

 28 February 2020: The Madras High Court has passed an order restraining the 7 trade unions representing contract workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Ltd (NLCIL) from going on a strike. The unions had issued a strike notice on 11 February demanding regularisation and equal pay for equal work for the contract workers many of who have been working for over 30 years.

The workers’ demands included permanent employment. After 10 rounds of negotiations, the unions have succeeded in winning regularisation for the contract workers over a period of next six years. Around 750 workers will be made permanent by the end of 2020. From 2021, contract workers will be appointed to 60% of the arising vacancies. The agreement is valid till 2026 and by that time, all the contract workers will become permanent workers

Patna: Teachers’ protest continues

22 February 2020: Hundreds of government schoolteachers staged protest at district education office against the show cause notices issued to the niyojit (contract) teachers and termination of regular teachers in Patna.  The teachers are demanding equal pay for equal work, pension scheme and service conditions for the contract teachers.

Around 4.5 lakh teachers of government and government-aided schools have been protesting under the banner of Bihar Rajya Shikshak Sangharsh Samanvay Samiti.

J&K: PHE daily wagers suspend 18-day long strike

26 February 2020: Daily rate wagers engaged in the Public Health Engineering Department of J&K suspended their 18-day long strike after the UT Administration accepted their demand for releasing regular monthly salaries. More than 30,000 daily wagers working in Jammu division and Kashmir Valley were protesting demanding payment of pending wages which were held up for the past four years, for a regularisation policy and better working conditions. The strike has been suspended till 30 April till which the government has sought time to release all pending wages.

Maharashtra: Unpaid for 2 months BSNL workers strike work

11 February 2020: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) workers went on strike on 11 February 2020 against non-payment of wages. Permanent employees have not been paid for over 2 months while wages of contract workers have been due for over 4 months. Furthermore workers are being forced to work overtime to cover for workers who accepted voluntary retirement on 31 January 2020.

Bihar: Contract Safai workers strike work, demand regularisation

4 February 2020: Over 4,500 contract safai workers who were rendered jobless on 1 February 2020 following an order of the Urban Development Department (UDD) directing all urban municipal bodies to stop engaging services of outsourced workers in Group D category went on strike in Patna city. The UDD direction has been a major blow to the movement of contract safai workers who have been demanding regularisation of their services for long.

Puducherry: Workers of Pondicherry Marketing Committee go on indefinite strike, demand payment of wages

3 February 2020: Over 150 workers who are employed by the Pondicherry Marketing Committee which facilitates the sale of agricultural produce in the Uzhavar Santhai went on strike on 3 February 2020 against non-payment of wages for the last 14 months.

Bank Unions call for 2 Day Bank strike for 5 day workweek and 20% wage hike

31 January 2020: Bank employees’ union go on a two day strike demanding a 20% pay hike, 5-day work week. Several PSU bank branches and even ATMs could remain shut for three days in many parts of India as the bank strike comes before Sunday. Around 10 lakh bank employees were expected to join the two-day protest.
