Tamil Nadu: Emergency Ambulance Service workers demand benefits at par with other health workers

27 March 2020: Over 2000 ambulance service workers including drivers and helpers who ensure the functioning of 108 ambulance services in the state sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding that the same benefits be extended to them which are being offered to other frontline workers engaged in emergency services during the lockdown such as doctors, nurses and Safai Karmcharis. Tamil Nadu government had announced 1 month’s wages as special allowance to healthcare and sanitation workers for their services during the lockdown period. 108 ambulance services workers are employed on contract and devoid of these benefits.

14 March 2020: The 34-day long protest of Safai Karmcharis at the National Law University Delhi (NLUD) has yielded in favour of the workers. 55 Safai Karmcharis were terminated in February after the varsity floated a new contract for maintenance and janitorial work. Some of the workers had been working as contract workers since the last 12 years. Students stood in solidarity with the striking workers and demanded that all terminated workers be reinstated. Finally, the labour department took cognizance of the ongoing protest of the workers and directed the varsity to reinstate the services of the contract safai workers immediately. It further added that if the contractor was unwilling to comply, fresh tenders for the services should be issued.

Punjab: Municipal workers demand seniority linked promotions

18 March 2020: Workers of the Water and Sanitation department of Punjab burnt the copies of draft new service rule book issued by the labour department in protest which has no mention of promotion policy of Group III and Group IV workers which includes pump operators, gardeners, gatekeepers, helper and sewer workers. Group III and IV workers have been protesting for revision of wages and promotions since 2018.

Tamil Nadu: MNREGA workers demand probe in expenditure, increase in number of working days to 250

11 March 2020: MNREGA workers in Dharampuri held a protest in front of the collector’s office demanding a social audit and enquiry of the funds spent under MNREGA as most workers remain unpaid for the days they have worked and unemployment allowances remain pending. Further, workers are demanding that the number of days of guaranteed employment be raised from existing 100 day to 250 days and wages be raised to Rs.600 per day since construction work has been included under the scheme and there remains a huge gap between the daily wages of construction workers and MNREGA workers.
