Sanitation workers die while working at the Taj Vivanta Hotel

Domestic work: On 12 April 2018, a domestic worker, Bubli (18) died after falling 13 floors through a shaft at the residential complex, Angel Jupiter Society in Indirapuram. She had been employed by the builder to clean a few unoccupied flats in a tower of the housing society,

Construction: On 16 April 2018, a construction worker Rizaul Haque Babul (34) died after falling off from the 3rd floor of a building in Malabar Hill in Mumbai. There was no provisions of protection in the construction site; security rope or protection equipment provided to the worker.

On 24 April 2018, a construction worker Veera Nayak (40) was killed and another worker Siddulu (30), sustained injuries when the roof of a residential building collapsed in Chandanagar, Hyderabad. 4 workers were engaged in demolition works on the first floor of a residential building when the roof collapsed.

On 28 April 2018, 2 workers K. Mosa (30) and M. Kotesh (36), died after falling off from the 3rd floor at a construction site at Manikonda, Hyderabad, Telangana. The incident occurred when the 2 workers deployed to empty cement bags lost balance while picking up cement bags from the trolley and fell off as there were no safety provisions in the construction site.

Sanitation: 2 workers Ravindra Kumar (40), STP operator and Vikram Singh (26), a contractual security guard of Taj died and 3 others were seriously injured Kamdev Patra (54), Nityanand (51) and Gaurav Sukheja (34) were admitted to the ICU, after inhaling toxic fumes emanated from a sewage treatment plant pipeline in Taj Vivanta in Khan Market area of New Delhi.

The repairing of the sewage leakage was outsourced to Eco Pollutech Engineers and Ravinder worked as a contractual maintenance staff at the sewer plant. He fell unconscious while repairing and the other 4 workers followed for his rescue.

On 17 April 2018, Mohammad Umar (26) a worker working on a sewer pipeline died after a mound, collapsed on him in Chawla area of Dwarka Vihar, New Delhi.

The worker was working with 7 workers at the Delhi Jal Board site. The construction work had been given to a private company by the Delhi Jal Board.

Manufacturing: On 17 April 2018, 2 power press operators Satender Ravidas (35) and Arvind (29), died due to asphyxiation and another worker Chandan was seriously injured after a fire broke out at a crockery-manufacturing factory in southwest Delhi’s Nawada Industrial Area. Workers were working night shift inside the factory when the fire broke out and the workers as the gates to the factory were locked from outside.

There were no safety provisions in the factory and the workers were also not provided any safety equipment. A group of 3 work through the night everyday while on the night of the fire, the factory owner allegedly made the workers work beyond the 12-hour shift — a violation of the Factories Act and the workers are paid Rs 200 for the 12-hour shift.

4 workers along with the owner of a cardboard factory, died in Rajasthan’s Alwar district on 29 April 2018, after getting trapped inside a 20-feet-deep tank at the factory. The incident occurred when a worker had gone down inside the water tank where paper is stored, to repair a pipe adjoining it.
