Maharashtra: Over 1,400 Sanitation Workers lose their jobs due to Spelling Errors in Names in Mumbai

25 May 2018: BrihanMumbai Corporation (BMC) regularised 2700 contract workers last year following a Supreme Court order after 15 years of struggle. Nine months later BMC terminated the services of 1400 of these workers claiming discrepancies in spellings of their names in documents submitted to the Supreme Court.

The inconsistencies in English spelling of the names is primarily because most of the workers are illiterate and the spellings in English on their identity cards and on the rolls of the court are written by others and not by them.

The termination on such flimsy ground is to ensure that this victory of the workers over employers does not become universally applicable in the case of regularisation of contract workers across the country.
